Public Service Recognition Week Action Calendar

May 4 - 10, 2025

Public Servants Power Democracy — #NoStaffNoService

Public Service Recognition Week comes at a defining moment. Across the country, Americans count on clean air, safe food, emergency response, Social Security checks, and so much more—all delivered by dedicated public servants. But the federal civil service—the people behind these essential services—is under growing political attack.

Mass firings, threats to job protections, and efforts to dismantle the professional workforce put everything at risk. Because the truth is simple: if we don’t have public servants, we don’t have public services. No staff means no service.

This week is about more than recognition—it’s about resistance and renewal. It’s a chance to thank public servants, yes, but also to sound the alarm and take action before the systems that serve our communities are hollowed out beyond repair.

We’re calling on individuals and organizations—civic groups, unions, students, local leaders, and anyone who believes in a government that delivers—to join a national week of action to defend, support, and celebrate the public workforce.

Together, we’ll send a clear message: civil servants are essential—and we are ready to fight for them.

Monday, May 5 — Comment Drive: Defend the Civil Service

Goal: Mobilize public comments opposing the proposed OPM rule that threatens civil service protections.

Actions

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has proposed a rule titled “Improving Performance, Accountability, and Responsiveness in the Civil Service.” While it claims to enhance performance and accountability, the rule is actually aimed at making it easier to fire federal employees, including for political reasons, undermining the merit-based system that ensures a nonpartisan, effective civil service. Today, we’re organizing a mass comment submission to oppose this rule and protect the integrity of our federal workforce.

How to Participate:

  • Understand the Stakes: Review this one-pager to learn more about the implications of the proposed rule.
  • Craft an Effective Comment: Utilize this step-by-step guide to write a personalized and impactful comment.
  • Submit a Public Comment here

Social Boost: “Today, I took a stand to protect the nonpartisan civil service by submitting a public comment against OPM’s proposed rule. Our democracy depends on a professional federal workforce. #PSRW2025 #NoStaffNoService #FedLove”

Tuesday, May 6 — Tuesday At The Library

Goal: Mobilize local, coordinated storytelling efforts to policymakers.

Actions:

  • Across the country, we’re turning local libraries into hubs of civic action. At lunchtime, gather with friends or neighbors at your local library and spend 45–60 minutes writing to your members of Congress.
  • Share how cuts to the federal workforce are affecting your community—and why federal workers and the services they deliver matter.

Social Boost: “We showed up today to support the people who make government work. Will you? #PSRW2025 #NoStaffNoService #FedLove”

Wednesday, May 7 — Tell Congress Your Story

Goal: Share with your member of Congress how these cuts to the federal government are impacting your life and your local community.

Actions:

Social Boost: “Just wrote my rep to tell them about why federal workers matter. Quiet firings are hurting my community. #NoStaffNoService #FedLove”

Thursday, May 8 — Gratitude in Action

Goal: Honor and thank the people who keep government running.

Action: Write a Thank-You Note to a Public Servant

Take a few minutes to write a thank-you note to a federal worker, agency, or public servant who makes a difference in your community. Whether it’s a VA caseworker, a park ranger, or a food safety inspector—let them know their work matters. We’ll be collecting these notes virtually here and delivering these thank-you notes through our partners to civil servants.

Social Boost: Post a thank-you message with a photo or tag: “Thank you to [Agency or Person] for [specific service]. Public servants are the backbone of our democracy. #PSRW2025 #ISupportFeds #NoStaffNoService #FedLove”

Friday, May 9 — Host a Dinner for Democracy

Goal: Create space for deeper, face-to-face conversations about the value of public service and the threats to effective government.

Action: Host a Dinner for Democracy

  • Host a Dinner for Democracy—a small, self-organized gathering with friends, family, or community members to reflect on the role of public service and what it will take to protect it. You don’t need to be an expert or host a formal event—just bring people together for a meal and a meaningful conversation. You can sign up to host or find our free digital toolkit here: democracyforward.org/dinners

Social Boost: “Hosting a Dinner for Democracy tonight with folks who care about making government work. Public service matters—and it’s up to us to protect it. #PSRW2025 #NoStaffNoService #DinnerForDemocracy #FedLove”

Saturday, May 10 —   Fed Up but not Giving Up

Goal: Wrap the week with momentum and next steps.

Actions:

  • Reflect on what you learned or did this week—then invite others in. Sign up for updates from Civil Service Strong and our partners, or plan a local follow-up event.
  • Share a message to Congress that you’re not done: “We’re watching, and we’re organizing.”
  • Going forward, show some #FedLove publicly when you notice an opportunity to thank a Fed.

Social Boost: “I took action this week to protect public servants. This isn’t the end—it’s the beginning. #PSRW2025 #NoStaffNoService #FedLove”
